Where are you from and how does that play into your work?
Africa but we lost touch due to the Atlantic slave trade. Often our music honors that heritage and wages artistic guerilla warfare to reclaim consciousness of our identity as Africans.
How are you different today as an artist/musician than you were 5 years ago?
More in the ceo seat and more in control of the business and long term destiny . Less stress. More paper:) as far as musically more hopeful more energy in the sound, more experimental.
What qualities of your favorite artist that you admire the most?
Curtis Mayfield - his soulful pimpish sound but razor sharp realness that uplifts and inspires
Sade - her consistent groove and mood and timeless sound. Its healing, sensual and meditative.
Scarface - the real conversation and narrative skill he displays. One of my favorites by face is "now I feel ya" Classic G. shit!
What attributes help separate your from other artists?
My upbringing and my experiences and my perspective is unique. We all are unique thats what makes they world go round. I been a vegan for many years, a martial artist, a member of a revolutionary organization (uhuru), I’m a producer, an author, a father, been married 15 years.. What is the first thing your remember producing?
This wasn’t exactly the first but it was about 15 years ago or so... A song called "I got to get the papers".. I used the same lyrics on our mix tape "Get Free Or Die Trying".. The song there is called "Tallahassee Days".. It is about the struggle to make ends meet, and the grind it takes in a capitalist world that don’t give a shit about you.
What event or events helped shape your style?
U.S. Imperialism and oppression and my communities victories and failures against it.
What challenges you?
Clutter, delegation, negative thoughts.
What would be the ultimate accomplishment of your career?
To independently develop and own major distribution and marketing for our work and other artist out there who need it.
What hobby that you have people wouldn’t guess you are into?
Sewing, drawing, sport shooting at the gun range.
Where is art/music going next?
In every direction accept backwards.
