Gilbert Young is a nationally renowned artist, muralist, and art conservator. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he served for 27 years as Director and Conservator of the University of Cincinnati’s multi-million-dollar Fine Art Collection. Several of his monumental murals remain on view in the greater Cincinnati area.

In 1994, Young was named Artist-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati. The following year, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he became Artistic Director for the International Paint Pals Art Competition in conjunction with the 1996 Olympic Games. He was commissioned by Procter & Gamble to design the Salute to Greatness Award for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and was featured in Ebony Man magazine as a “Talented & Impressive Black Artist.”

Young made history as the first artist to create a live painting on stage accompanied by a full symphony orchestra. His commemorative portrait of Maestro Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati POPS Orchestra is now installed at Cincinnati’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

Over the course of his career, Young has received numerous honors and recognitions, including:

  • Featured in Who’s Who in Black Atlanta (2010 & 2012)

  • Honored as one of five “Champions of the Arts” by Big Boi’s Big Kidz Foundation (2011)

  • Inducted into Who’s Who in America (2012)

  • Recipient of the Heritage Award for Outstanding Visual Arts, Schomburg Center, NY (2001)

  • Pallet Award for Lifetime Achievement, Heritage Arts Festival, Atlanta (2004)

  • State of Georgia Artist of the Year, GA House of Representatives Resolution (2011)

  • Phoenix Award for outstanding contributions to the arts, City of Atlanta (2013)

  • Hero & Heroine Lifetime Achievement Award, Sweet Auburn Spring Fest (2014)

  • Recognition for Artistic Achievement, GA Legislative Black Caucus (2015)

  • Lifetime Achievement Award, Barack H. Obama Foundation (2017)

Young is the only artist in the world to paint a portrait of a U.S. President that was personally signed by the subject. His painting History + Hope = Change was signed by President Barack Obama in 2008. In 2015, the Congressional Club of Washington commissioned Young to create a portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama, which was unveiled at the annual First Lady’s Luncheon in honor of her “Let’s Move” campaign.

His work can be found in galleries across the United States, in international collections, and in private and corporate collections worldwide—including St. Petersburg, Russia’s City Hall.
