Mat Curran is a painter and designer whose practice merges the energetic vitality of graffiti with the meditative and mindful process of hand cut paper stenciling. A native of Northamptonshire, England and a current resident of Los Angeles, Mat identifies North Carolina as his true home. After years of painting graffiti on the streets of N.C. Mat earned a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2003. He went on to refine his distinct style through a decade long intensive studio practice in Raleigh, N.C. Mat blends his formal training in graphic design and printmaking with his experiences in street art and graffiti culture to create work that is dynamic, deeply layered, and uniquely his own.

Mat has exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art, The Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and galleries from England to Tokyo. His murals can be seen on the campus of Duke University, Dollar Tree Headquarters in Chesapeake, VA, Alta Ink in Los Angeles, CA and private homes across the country. Small works can be seen on the streets of cities as Mat travels, nestled within the urban tangle for passers by to discover and enjoy.
